What is a Sleep Study?

Contact Us

A sleep study is a series of tests designed to determine behaviors and sleeping patterns during sleep. During a sleep study, important body functions are analyzed and measured, including heart rate, respiration, airflow, muscle tone, and oxygen saturation. Eye movements and brain activity are also monitored and tracked to evaluate stages of sleep, including when you fall into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Why Your ENT Specialist May Recommend a Sleep Study

Your ENT specialist may order a sleep study if you are experiencing:

  • Frequent, loud snoring
  • A choking, gasping sensation when you wake up
  • Daytime grogginess
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • A sore throat most mornings

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour.

Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. Sleep apnea is usually a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep. You often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow. This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Advanced Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea & Snoring

If conservative treatments are not effective, advanced procedures may be recommended to improve airflow and reduce airway obstruction during sleep. Treatment is based on your specific anatomy and the severity of symptoms.

Options may include:

  • Implantable Airway Stimulation Therapy: A small device that works with your natural breathing patterns to help keep the airway open during sleep, often for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP.
  • Airway Support & Soft Palate Procedures: Treatments that reduce tissue vibration and help stabilize the airway to improve breathing and decrease snoring.
  • Tongue & Airway Advancement Procedures: Techniques such as genioglossal advancement or hyoid suspension to reposition structures and improve airflow.
  • Minimally Invasive & Robotic Procedures: Targeted treatments to reduce excess tissue and address obstruction in the throat or tonsillar region.
  • Comprehensive Surgical Options: Procedures such as UPPP may be recommended for more complex cases.

A Less Invasive Approach

Newer techniques are available that help open and support the airway with less disruption to surrounding structures. These options often allow for faster recovery and reduced discomfort compared to traditional surgery.
